In a previous diary, I mentioned that I wanted to be part of Operation Move Your Money, so I opened up a new account at a local credit union.
Since my new checks arrived and my initial deposit cleared, it was time to finish the job. Today I closed my accounts at Wells Fargo.
Since I neglected to bring a camera crew and a group of 30 others closing their accounts in solidarity, I don't have a gripping video of an innocent bystander getting arrested.

What I do have was a fairly easy time closing the accounts down. I went to a teller, and when I told her I wanted to close my account, I was told I needed to meet with a banker. Both were occupied. (Ha ha)
When I said I was in a bit of a hurry (kid had an orthodontist appointment in 45 minutes), a banker was available within a minute. We sat down, she checked the spelling of my name with me, we confirmed all the accounts, and I told her to draw up two cashiers checks payable to me.
That way, they don't know where the money went until the checks clear. So no, I didn't make any persuasive speeches about how the Too Big To Fail banks were poisoning the economy and were responsible for predatory loan practices. I just withdrew a stagecoach full of my share of it and will place it with a more responsible party.
The banker never asked me directly why I was closing the account. I did say that I was going to be depositing it elsewhere and they did not ask where or why. I wonder if I'm going to get one of those online questionnaires asking if I was unhappy with their service.
Nah. Just their ethics.
